Kristina, Katy and I got an 8am-odd train from Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof (12.02.11). We were pretty damn tired after trying to make the most of the last few days. Kristina got there before me and a German girl helped her get her bag up the stairs. She was still baked from the night before and was rattling on in heavily-accented English about how travelling shouldn't be about buildings, it should be about people. The female, German Dylan Moran/Bernard Black!
We reached Mainz und machte unsere Abschiedsgrüße zu Katy, die weiter nach Heidelberg fuhr.
We got picked up by Kristina's aunt and then we drove to their little town called Wöllstein. I wouldn't like to live there... it was like being in country NSW except with bigger settlements I guess you'd call them and her aunt said most people have to travel an hour to the nearest major cities for work. She lives there with Kristina's grandmother and their house is really nice. It was filled with the product of a life time of accumulation of stuff like antique crockery and it was a little bit too big for just 2 women but maybe that's what happens when you don't have children.
After a nap we went for a walk. It was completely quiet, everything was pretty flat and cold and bleak. We found an Aldi and Kristina almost walked out onto the 80 km/hr road because she looked the wrong way! "The least conspicuous way to die", it would've been.
We had dinner at some random restaurant/winery in the middle of nowhere that was connected to a barn which they use to entertain kids when the parents are wine tasting or something. Had a sweet schnitzel and huge glass of wine, some awkward conversation, and then her aunt didn't let us pay.
We spent fucking ages planning and booking Copenhagen then transferring music to each other's laptops. Then by the time we finished packing it was late and we didn't catch up on any sleep!
We left the next morning pretty early and her aunt gave me possibly the least German farewell by giving me a big hug and kiss on the cheek. That was a bit scary.
