Play my position like a showsta'

11.8.11

Modest Mouse played the Enmore Theatre on Monday the 25th of July. They played "Dashboard" and "Float On", two obvious favourites that were a delight and a slow song whose name I forget which I really enjoyed. They also played a lot of angry, faceless, rock-y songs I didn't recognise.

Looking back at the photos I realise that I remember this night for the conversation with Karla before dinner, dinner (Guzman y Gomez), swinging Karla's really heavy bag into Rory and her, Rory's car taking a million tries to start and the guy in the car opposite us looking at him weirdly, and "Dilemma" by Nelly and Kelly Roland as much as... if not more than I do for Modest Mouse and their supporting act Deep Sea Arcade. Simran telling me it was nice to see me in such a happy mood the day after this is perhaps also more memorable. And so, we start here, with

Rory's caffeine addiction (even though he doesn't like to call it that!)

Did not remember from last time that Deep Sea Arcade's lead singer is such a tool. The rest of the band were pretty sharply dressed and professional but he stuck out, and not in a good way. His vocals were pretty weak too, not helped by the bad job the sound guys did. Still think "Crouch End" is a great song and "Circles" isn't bad either, wish they had more. Haven't uncovered a truly great Sydney band in a while.

I include this because of the woman flipping us the bird. There were some of the worst kind of music fans there that night. The black guy who was really sorry pushing in front of everyone but just that he had mates up the front and he's a really big fan but obviously not so devoted because he can afford to push back through people halfway through a song to find someone and then push back to the front again. He also took a thousand photos of the same thing and also made several failed attempts at getting a photo of himself with the band as a backdrop. Can't remember if it was this woman or another one but there were two of them and they were "fuckin' annoying" too.

Ah the Enmore... too big for intimacy, too small for the grand occasion.

This roadie was a rocksta'

The gaunt multi-instrumentalist in the centre there.

You can just about see the two drummers here. I wish I had a better view of them in action.

I wish I had a better view of Isaac Brock. His eyes are so intense. Nikki got to meet and take a photo with him.
